Television Catch up

Been watching loads of t.v. this weekend on catch up and guess what the surpise was?

Doctors! I'm finding the receptionist stalker storyline riveting and Joy Wilkinson's blind guy episode was fantastic. And, on top of that a first time writer did the episode before and it was excellent. The actress who plays the receptionist is brilliant. They really built this up over a long time and it works.

Eastenders has been a let down for me recently. I was really hoping Gary Hobbs was dead because he hasn't been doing too much for a long time. I feel that the Dawn storyline is being a bit forced as Dawn would never go with Gary. Just don't buy it. Yeah, she offered to sleep with him once but she was really grieving. As far as I know they haven't even kissed before and now she's willing to have a relationship. And the Heather/gigolo thing was so obvious. How could they believe that guy who snogged Heather was the gigolo when any gigolo would need to know who the target was? Heather's friend with the spiky hair isn't that stupid but she was for that night.

Being Human on BBC 3 was very funny in places and very weird. Very believable. Lots of emotional truth in it.

The End of Critical Mass

We had our last playwrighting session. So sad. It was the best. We got feedback on our first drafts and then we watched Caryl Churchill's 10 minute free play and then we all went for a drink and had a lovely love-in.

Caryl's Play:

As soon as it started, I thought: Thank god it's only ten minutes.
Five minutes into the play I wasn't sure what was going on and then I looked at the flyer and was reminded it was about Gaza and then the rest of it I got. The last bit was quite good. Moving. At the end, the fellow writer I was sitting next to remarked "if we had written this we wouldn't have got anywhere near the Royal Court." But Caryl is a legend and Top Girls is a classic and it's all for a good cause.

More drama:

Whilst waiting for my train on the Charing Cross concourse these drunks were circling each other about to fight and one of the drunks' girlfriends was trying to stop it from kicking off. The whole concourse was transfixed. I couldn't stop laughing because they were so drunk you knew that they couldn't really hurt each other but they were squaring up and one of them was shouting to intimidate, which was a little scary. It was incredibly watchable. I'm embarrassed to admit that I found this more entertaining than Caryl's play. So uncouth...

This is hilarious...

Bola Agbaje's 3 minute play....

Can't stop listening to it.

Oh yes, my radio producer just told me that my first radio play is having it's repeat on Thursday 26th. So if you missed it the first time round why not tune in?

I must admit, I still have fond thoughts about this play, even with it's imperfections....

Anyway, I have added a list of upcoming stuff that's gonna be on in whatever medium as I like what Paul Campbell has done on his blog. Makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Writing for Doctors

Since January, I have been researching the writers on Doctors, as I am keen to get a television credit. Here are my findings so far...

Apart from the Writers Academy writers, I have not yet seen a first time writer. I'm wondering if there are any. Lots of regular writers have been doing the soap for years... I was under the impression that this was where writers cut their teeth and moved on. Is this not the case anymore? Are people staying with Doctors because there is nowhere else to go as drama output is superceded by reality t.v.? I don't know. It's just a bit depressing. But then it's only February.

Slumdog Millionaire

Oh my god!

Not only do cute kids with big eyes get me every time but the set ups and pay offs were weaved in so subtly I wanted to weep. It makes me remember why I love the movies....

However, my brother initially remarked some of the scenes were reminiscent of Trainspotting but I think he topped them.
